Chasing wildflowers and seeking soft lighting lends itself to being in Upper Bidwell Park near sunset, quite often. Most days after chasing wildflowers walking back out of the park, I am joined by the call of frogs near my feet, and the call of coyotes from behind me as I scurry forward in the fading light.
During other times of year, I often watch as afternoon clouds roll in, seeking just the right set up for a magical sunset. I then hustle to the park to find a good location to capture images.
Other fun photography is catching light in puddles from recent rains or reflections in Horseshoe Lake. It’s a common gathering area for sunsets, given the easy access. Those ready for more of a hike will venture up Monkey Face from the same parking area. Spots along the North Rim and South Rim Trail both offer some wonderful sunset views, as well, if you choose to hike further into the park.
