Bidwell Park has been a playground since my childhood. Though I didn’t grow up in my hometown, relatives living her kept my family coming back to Chico many times a year. One Mile, 5 Mile, Hooker Oak were all gathering spots for our family.
As I got older, my interest turned to the rugged beauty in Upper Bidwell Park. Chasing sun and good times in the many swimming holes from Day Camp to Beah Hole. At that time vehicles could drive to the very end of the road, so we would go out to the swimming holes between Salmon Hole, and Brown’s Hole.
In a decision to help the health of the park and really the community, the park road was closed, and alcohol was no longer allowed reducing human impacts and bringing new visitors chasing wildflowers.
Stepping onto the trails of Upper Park, minutes from our busy town, I am able to let go and simply be in and with the natural world allowing a needed escape and often providing inspiring views, no matter which trail I choose.
